See how temperature and intended use affect the choice, and why the correct cylinder and regulator matter.
Propane or butane? Choosing the correct gas for your appliance and conditions matters. Propane continues to perform at much lower temperatures. It turns to gas at around minus 42 degrees Celsius, compared with approximately minus 2 degrees for butane—making propane better suited to outdoor and colder-weather use.
Propane is commonly used for patio heaters, caravans, outdoor cooking and suitable commercial equipment. Butane is generally better suited to warmer conditions and compatible portable heaters, camping stoves and summer cooking equipment.
Always use the correct cylinder and regulator specified by the appliance manufacturer. Propane and butane regulator systems are different—never force an incompatible fitting.
